St. Peter Canisius


St. Peter Canisius

An important figure in the Catholic counter-reformation that responded to the 16th century spread of Protestantism, the priest and Doctor of the Church Saint Peter Canisius is remembered liturgically on Dec. 21.

His efforts as a preacher, author, and religious educator strengthened the Catholic faith in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and parts of Central Europe during a period of doctrinal confusion.

Writing about St. Peter Canisius in 1897, Pope Leo XIII noted similarities between the late 19th century and the saint’s own lifetime, “a period when the spirit of revolution and looseness of doctrine resulted in a great loss of faith and decline in morals.”

More recently, in a 2011 general audience, Pope Benedict XVI taught that the Jesuit saint found success in ministry by living as “a personal witness of Jesus and an instrument at his disposal, bound to him closely by faith in his Gospel and in his Church.”

Peter Kanis – his name later Latinized to “Canisius” – was born in the Netherlands during May 1521. His father Jacob was a wealthy public official, but his mother Aegidia died soon after his birth. Peter began his university studies in Cologne around age 15, and obtained his master’s degree before he turned 20. His friends during this period included several men who held to the Catholic faith in opposition to the Protestant doctrines then gaining ground in Germany.

Despite his father’s preference that he should marry, Peter made a decision in 1540 to remain celibate. Three years later he entered the Society of Jesus under the influence of Blessed Peter Faber, one of the first companions of Saint Ignatius Loyola. He founded the first Jesuit house in Germany and became a priest in 1546.

Only one year after his ordination, Peter accompanied the Bishop of Augsburg to the Council of Trent as a theological adviser. He spent a portion of his time in Italy working directly with Saint Ignatius Loyola, before leaving for Bavaria where he would serve as a university professor as well as a catechist and preacher. This combination of academic and pastoral work continued at Vienna from 1552, allowing him to visit and assist many Austrian parishes which found themselves without a priest.

During the mid-1550s Peter’s evangelistic journeys took him to Prague, where he eventually founded a Jesuit school along with another in Bavaria, and later a third in Munich. The year 1555, in particular, was a landmark for Canisius: St. Ignatius promoted him to a leadership position within the order, which he held until 1569, and he published the first and longest version of his Catholic catechism. This work, and its two shorter adaptations, went through hundreds of printings and remained in use for centuries.

Involved in discussions with Protestants during 1557, Peter made a strong case for the Church by showing how the adherents of Protestantism could not agree with one another in matters of doctrine. Meanwhile, he maintained his commitment to religious instruction on the popular level – teaching children, giving retreats, and preaching carefully-crafted, doctrinally-rich sermons to large crowds.

Canisius’ service to the Council of Trent continued during the early 1560s, though mostly from a distance. He kept up a demanding schedule of preaching and establishing universities, while also working to ensure that the council’s decrees were received and followed in Germany after it concluded. His tireless efforts over the next two decades contributed to a major revival of German Catholicism.

A mystical experience in 1584 convinced Canisius that he should cease his travels and remain in Switzerland for the rest of his life. He spent his last years building up the Church in Fribourg through his preaching, teaching, and writing. Peter suffered a near-fatal stroke in 1591, but recovered and continued as an author for six years. The Dutch Jesuit saw writing as an essential form of apostolic work, a view supported by the continued use of his catechism long after his death on Dec. 21, 1597.

St. Peter Canisius was simultaneously canonized and declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI in May of 1925. In a famous saying, the Jesuit priest revealed the secret behind the accomplishments of his energetic and fruitful life: “If you have too much to do, with God’s help you will find time to do it all.”

The Gift of God / El Don de Dios

The Gospel scene of the Annunciation can be seen as a summary of the entire Gospel. It shows the mystery of God becoming man, but also the mystery of man freely cooperating in the saving action of God. Mary stands in place of all of us, modeling the proper response of the creature to her Creator. At God’s invitation she answers humbly that she is the handmaid of the Lord, accepting whatever He wills. It is this answer that allows our Redeemer to come to save us, that is the means by which the Word was made flesh to dwell among us, and that changes all of history. Gabriel has come to present God’s invitation and receive Mary’s response; as soon as she assents, the angel departs from her.

Mary’s yes to God reverses Eve’s no; her humility begins the undoing of the effects of Eve’s pride; her patient waiting for the unfolding of the details of God’s will is the counter-move to Eve’s reaching for what was not hers to take. Because of Mary’s proper response to God’s invitation we see the glorious result: God with us, God within us, God among us, God at work in the world.

Mary doesn’t receive in order to enrich herself or to hide away enjoying the Gift in secret – she receives the Lord so that she can bring Him to others, and the first thing she does is go “in haste” to her cousin Elizabeth. She is the first “Christ-bearer,” and she carries the Light into the darkness, carries Love into the indifference, carries Life into a world deadened by sin. She brings forth from her own body the Food that will sustain us on our journey Home, the Truth that guides our way.

We are right in the middle of the seven “O Antiphons,” those verses prayed at Evening Prayer every Advent since the 700’s, which we all know from the hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel: “O Key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom: come and free the prisoners of darkness!” The Annunciation shows us the very beginning of this freedom, the coming of the Key that will open the gates sealed against sinful humanity since Adam and Eve, the coming of the Light that conquers every darkness. But the Messiah comes to win the victory not with violent clashing of swords and mighty trumpets, but with humility, obedience, and absolute steadfastness – He wins the victory by refusing to take any shortcuts or back down, by teaching and serving, all the way to the utter outpouring of Himself. He conquers all, one heart at a time, by giving Himself.

And it all begins right here, in the womb of the sinless young maiden, who will give birth quietly, in the dark, in the cold, unnoticed. Her yes to the angel reaches all the way to that abject poverty and humility, and all the way to the Cross, the throne of the Redeemer King born for us on Christmas.

Estamos justo en medio de los siete días cuando rezamos los antífonas navideñas, los versos que hemos rezado todos los Advientos desde los años 700, que todos conocemos por el himno Oh Ven, Oh Ven, Emmanuel: “Oh Llave de David, que abres las puertas del Reino eterno de Dios: ¡ven y libera a los prisioneros de las tinieblas!” La Anunciación nos muestra el comienzo mismo de esta libertad, la venida de la Llave que abrirá las puertas selladas contra la humanidad pecadora desde Adán y Eva, la venida de la Luz que vence toda oscuridad. Pero el Mesías viene a ganar la victoria no con choque violento de espadas y poderosas trompetas, sino con humildad, obediencia y firmeza absoluta. Él gana la victoria al negarse a tomar atajos o retroceder, enseñando y sirviendo, todo el camino hasta la efusión total de sí mismo. Conquista todo, un corazón a la vez, dándose a sí mismo.

Y todo comienza aquí mismo, en el vientre de la joven doncella sin pecado, que dará a luz en silencio, en la oscuridad, en el frío, sin ser notada. Su “sí” al ángel llega hasta esa abyecta pobreza y humildad, y hasta la Cruz, el trono del Rey Redentor nacido para nosotros en la Navidad.

St. Dominic of Silos


St. Dominic of Silos

Saint Dominic was born in 1000 in Cañas, Navarre, Spain. He was born a peasant, and as a youth worked as a shepherd until he entered the Benedictine monastery in Navarre. When Dominic refused to hand over the monastery lands at the King of Navarre’s demands, he was forced to leave the house with two other monks.

He fled to Old Castile and was welcomed by the king. He then entered the monastery of San Sebastian in Silos, an almost dilapidated abbey with a mediocre physical and spiritual regimen. 

Within very little time, Dominic, who had been elected abbot, renewed the spirit of the monastery and rebuilt it’s structure, it’s finances, and it’s works of charity. Dominic was known for miracles of healing, which he obtained through prayer and for his work of ransoming Christian prisoners from the moors.

He died on December 10, 1073 in Silos, Spain.

Trust in the One / Confíar en Dios

I don’t know about you, but I cannot count the times I have said, “If only God could send me a clear message about (insert whatever current issue or problem is going on in my life that I need guidance on), then I would know what to do and move forward. It would be so much easier than me trying to figure this out.” 

In today’s Gospel we see Him doing just that, informing Zechariah of the plan, all the way down to the name of his son, and yet, he is confused. Maybe this is why we are not sent messengers.  We think we want an angel, a burning bush, or a transfiguration to reveal the ‘plan’ to us. But perhaps we would do just as Zechariah did, asking so many questions instead of trusting in the Lord. All was revealed and we see the nervousness of Zechariah. I think that is why God reveals things to us slowly and often in ordinary ways.

Slowly is good. It gives us time to process, to turn the new idea over a bit in our mind, to get fully on board with the plan, with God’s plan. Many times, in life, we think if we knew the outcome, we could get through the pain more easily. I no longer think that would work for me. I have often thought, “Thank God I did not know exactly where this path was leading me; I might have run in the opposite direction.” 

God reaches us in ordinary ways. We can hear him through a phone call from a friend, a meaningful Scripture passage we read, or a song on the radio. Our lives are fuller if we see God in all the facets of our lives. Answers rise up in us when we unite our purpose to His and follow God. Part of following God is surrender. Not giving up but giving in to God. He really does know what is best for us. 

In a few days, the birth of Jesus will be upon us. John came before Jesus to prepare the way. God calls each of us, in some way, to also prepare the way for Jesus. Whether you are able to see the whole plan or part of it, say yes, surrender to the will of God, and do as He asks without question or complaint. Trust in the One.

No sé lo que te pasa a ti, pero yo no puedo contar las veces que he dicho: “Si Dios pudiera enviarme un mensaje claro sobre (cualquier asunto o problema actual que esté pasando en mi vida sobre el que necesito orientación), entonces sabría qué hacer y seguiría adelante. Sería mucho más fácil que yo tratando de descifrarlo”.

En el Evangelio de hoy vemos a Dios haciendo precisamente eso, informando a Zacarías del plan, hasta el nombre de su hijo, y sin embargo, está confundido. Tal vez por eso no se nos envía mensajeros. Creemos que queremos un ángel, una zarza ardiente o una transfiguración para que nos revele el “plan”. Pero tal vez haríamos lo mismo que Zacarías, haciendo tantas preguntas en lugar de confiar en el Señor. Todo fue revelado y vemos el nerviosismo de Zacarías. Creo que es por eso que Dios nos revela las cosas lentamente y, a menudo, de maneras ordinarias.

Lentamente es bueno. Nos da tiempo para procesar, para darle vueltas a la nueva idea que tenemos en mente, para adentrarnos completamente en el plan, en el plan de Dios. Muchas veces en la vida, pensamos que si supiéramos el resultado, podríamos superar el dolor más fácilmente. Ya no creo que eso funcione para mí. A menudo he pensado: “Gracias a Dios no sabía exactamente a dónde me llevaba este camino; podría haber corrido en la dirección opuesta”.

Dios se nos revela de maneras ordinarias. Podemos escucharlo a través de una llamada telefónica de un amigo, un pasaje significativo de las Escrituras que leemos o una canción en la radio. Nuestras vidas son más plenas si vemos a Dios en todas las facetas de la vida. Las respuestas surgen en nosotros cuando unimos nuestro propósito al suyo y seguimos a Dios. Parte de seguir a Dios es la entrega. No darse por vencido, sino entregarse a Dios. Él realmente sabe lo que es mejor para nosotros.

En unos días, el nacimiento de Jesús estará sobre nosotros. Juan vino antes que Jesús para preparar el camino. Dios llama a cada uno de nosotros, de alguna forma, a preparar el camino para Jesús también. Ya sea que puedas ver el plan completo o solo una parte de él, di que sí, entrégate a la voluntad de Dios y haz lo que te pide sin preguntas ni quejas. Confía en Dios.

Blessed Pope Urban V

Blessed Pope Urban V was born Guillaume de Grimoard at Grisac in Languedoc, 1310. He studied canon law and theology in Avignon and became a Benedictine monk. He was named abbot of his monastery in 1352, and served as a papal diplomat and was eventually sent as an ambassodor to various locations. He also served as a bishop around Italy and throughout Europe. He was elected pope in 1362 while on diplomatic business, even though he was not a cardinal. His reign was blessed by his peacekeeping activity between the French and Italian kings, the founding of many universities, his zeal for the crusades and his decision to return the papacy to Rome and end the Avignon exile of the popes. However, the breakout of war between England and France forced him to return to Avignon on a peacekeeping mission

He died on his return to Avignon, and his body, which had been buried at Avignon, was then transferred to Marseille according to his own wishes, and his tomb became the site of many miracles. He died on December 19, 1370. He always had a Benedictine spirit, and even wore his monk’s habit as Pope. His virtue and honesty were noted, especially in a Europe plagued by scandal and corruption.

It is said that as he lay dying he called the people to surround his deathbed, saying “the people must see how popes die.”

A Boy and a Gift / Un Niño y un Regalo

Here we are, with Christmas just one week away. The anticipation is mounting as we try to maintain our holy observance of the final days of Advent while, at the same time, preparing for the more secular celebrations we have adopted, such as buying presents, decorating our homes and preparing for family and feasting.

Every year about this time, I am reminded of the year when I only asked for one gift: a bicycle. I don’t even remember exactly how old I was, somewhere around 7 or 8 or 9, but nothing else was on my mind. I had learned how to ride on my older brother’s bike, and now I was ready for my own.

That Christmas, I remember as presents were handed out and wrapping paper was ripped off, I started to collect quite a pile of gifts. In fact, I specifically remember thinking, “I didn’t get this much stuff last year.” We were not rich, and there were five kids at the time, but my parents always did their best to give us a merry Christmas. I remember I even received an electric football game that boys my age in the mid-1970s loved. 

But it wasn’t a bicycle. When all the presents were opened, I specifically remember the huge disappointment I felt. I also knew better than to express it. My parents had been very generous to me, so who was I to be sullen and disappointed? And then my father asked me, “Is something wrong?” Uh-oh. Did I look disappointed? What was wrong with me? How dare I be sad when they had been so good to me. “Nothing, I’m just looking over my gifts.” 

“Come with me,” he said. He put his hand on my shoulder and led me upstairs. Oh no, I thought, I’m really going to get it. I’m going to be punished on Christmas for being an ungrateful little wretch. I started to shake and held back tears. I knew I was in for it. He led me into his study, and I braced myself for what was coming, and there was the most beautiful red and gold banana-seat bicycle I had ever seen in my life. I cried all right, glorious tears of childish joy.

Fast forward 50-some years to today. I read the beginning of Matthew’s Gospel, and I realize the true gift of Christmas. Jesus is all we need, and He is all I want, this year and every year. The joy He brings so far exceeds anything a bicycle could do, I almost shudder to think how naïve I was. My parents loved me, but God has loved me so much more, sending his only Son to Earth for us, to be sacrificed for our sins and the Savior of our souls. May we all have that great, intense anticipation that Jesus, this season and always, enter more and more into our hearts. Thank you, dear Father, for the greatest gift of all.

Aquí estamos, a tan solo una semana de la Navidad. La emoción aumenta a medida que tratamos de mantener la santa observancia de los últimos días de Adviento y, al mismo tiempo, nos preparamos para las celebraciones más seculares que hemos adoptado, como comprar regalos, decorar la casa y prepararnos para la familia y los festejos.

Todos los años, por esta época, me acuerdo del año cuando pedí un solo regalo: una bicicleta. Ni siquiera recuerdo exactamente cuántos años tenía, alrededor de 7, 8 o 9 años, pero no pensaba en nada más. Había aprendido a andar en la bicicleta de mi hermano mayor y ahora estaba listo para tener la mía.

Me acuerdo que esa Navidad, mientras repartían los regalos y arrancamos el papel de ellos, comencé a recolectar una gran cantidad. De hecho, me acuerdo de haber pensado específicamente: “El año pasado no recibí tantas cosas”. Mis papás no eran ricos y éramos cinco hijos en ese momento, pero siempre hicieron lo mejor que pudieron para darnos una feliz Navidad. Me acuerdo que incluso recibí un juego de fútbol electrónico, que a los chicos de mi edad en los años 70 les encantaba. 

Pero no era una bicicleta. Al terminar de abrir todos los regalos, me acuerdo específicamente de la enorme decepción que sentí. También sabía que no debía expresarla. Mis padres habían sido muy generosos conmigo, así que ¿quién era yo para estar malhumorado y decepcionado? Me van a castigar en la Navidad por ser un pequeño desgraciado y mal agradecido. Empecé a temblar y a contener las lágrimas. Sabía que me esperaba algo así. Me llevó a su estudio y me preparé para lo que me esperaba. Y allí estaba la bicicleta más hermosa que había visto en mi vida con asiento largo roja y dorada. Lloré, sí, lágrimas gloriosas de la alegría infantil.

Avance rápido 50 años hasta el día de hoy. Leí el comienzo del Evangelio de Mateo y me di cuenta del verdadero regalo de Navidad. Jesús es todo lo que necesitamos y es todo lo que quiero, este año y todos los años. La alegría que trae supera con creces todo lo que una bicicleta podría hacer; hasta me da vergüenza pensar en lo inocente que fui. Mis padres me amaban, pero Dios me ha amado mucho más, enviando a su único Hijo a la Tierra por nosotros, para ser sacrificado por nuestros pecados y ser el Salvador de nuestras almas. Que todos tengamos esa gran e intensa esperanza de que Jesús, en esta temporada y siempre, entre cada vez más en nuestros corazones. Gracias, querido Padre, por el regalo más grande de todos.

St. Gatian of Tours


St. Gatian of Tours

Not much is known about the life of Saint Gatian, but we do know that he was the first bishop of Tours in France, and is said to be a disciple of Saint Denis of Paris. Arriving in Gaul, a pagan land, completely untouched by the Good News, Gatian scattered the first seeds of the faith in the region of Tours, laying the foundations of the Church in the city of the great Saint Martin.

Saint Gatian died in 337.

Jesus’ Family and Ours / La Familia de Jesús y la Nuestra

Reading the genealogy of Jesus always felt tedious – like finding a dust filled box of old family photos in the attic and not feeling any connection. Until I listened to the Bible in a Year podcast with Fr. Mike Schmitz, I yawned through this reading each year. After getting through the whole Old Testament, I had an appreciation for those who came before Jesus. They were people like me, not just names.

Jesus was born into an imperfect family just like us. He probably had crazy uncles, strange aunts, and uncomfortable holiday dinners just like we do. In becoming one of us, God chose to come here in a family with all that that includes. The Old Testament is his family history and it gives us perspective on the present. We get clarity by seeing what came before us. It shows us how loving our God is. He doesn’t demand perfection and that’s great because none of us can achieve it. 

I know my family has faults but he has entered in and done beautiful things in our hearts. I know that I am not worthy that he should enter under my roof, but he has, just as he has since the beginning of time, and for that I am grateful. 

The Bible is the story of salvation and that story is still being written. Its cast of characters includes amazing and not-so-amazing people and Jesus’ family falls in there.  It’s good to honor them by saying their names. It’s worth our time to read the story of all the people we heard about in today’s Gospel. It’s our story too.

Leer la genealogía de Jesús siempre me resultó tediosa, como encontrar una caja llena de polvo con fotos familiares antiguas en el ático y no sentir ninguna conexión. Hasta que escuché el podcast La Biblia en un Año con el Padre Mike Schmitz, bostezaba con esta lectura todos los años. Después de repasar todo el Antiguo Testamento, comencé a apreciar a quienes vinieron antes de Jesús. Eran personas como tú y yo, no solo nombres.

Jesús nació dentro de una familia imperfecta como la nuestra. Probablemente tuvo tíos locos, tías extrañas y cenas navideñas incómodas como las que tenemos nosotros. Al convertirse en uno de nosotros, Dios eligió venir a la tierra dentro de una familia con todo lo que eso incluye. El Antiguo Testamento es su historia familiar y nos da perspectiva sobre el presente. Obtenemos claridad al ver lo que vino antes de nosotros. Nos muestra cuán amoroso es nuestro Dios. Felizmente no exige la perfección porque ninguno de nosotros puede lograrla.

Sé que mi familia tiene fallas, pero Dios ha entrado y ha hecho cosas hermosas en nuestros corazones. Yo sé que no soy digna de que entre en mi casa, pero ha entrado, como siempre lo ha hecho, y por eso le estoy agradecida.

La Biblia es la historia de la salvación y esa historia todavía se está escribiendo. Su elenco de personajes incluye personas asombrosas y no tan asombrosas, y la familia de Jesús se encuentra entre ellas. Es bueno honrarlos diciendo sus nombres. Vale la pena dedicar el tiempo a leer la historia de todas las personas de las que escuchamos en el Evangelio de hoy, porque es nuestra historia también.

St. Olympias


St. Olympias

Born sometime between 360-365, this pious, charitable, and wealthy disciple of St. John Chrysostom came from an illustrious family in Constantinople. Her father (called by the sources Secundus or Selencus) was a “Count” of the empire. One of her ancestors, Ablabius, filled the consulor office in 331, and was also praetorian prefect of the East.

As Olympias was not thirty years of age in 390, she cannot have been born before 361. Her parents died when she was quite young, and left her an immense fortune. In either 384 or 385 she married Nebridius, Prefect of Constantinople. St. Gregory of Nazianzus, who had left Constantinople in 381, was invited to the wedding, but wrote a letter excusing his absence (Ep. cxciii, in P.G., XXXVI, 315), and sent the bride a poem (P.G., loc. cit., 1542 sqq.). Within a short time Nebridius died, and Olympias was left a childless widow. She steadfastly rejected all new proposals of marriage, determining to devote herself to the service of God and to works of charity. Nectarius, Bishop of Constantinople (381-97), consecrated her deaconess.

On the death of her husband, the emperor had appointed the urban prefect administrator of her property, but in 391 (after the war against Maximus) he restored to her the administration of her large fortune. She built beside the principal church of Constantinople a convent, into which three relatives and a large number of maidens withdrew with her to consecrate themselves to the service of God. When St. John Chrysostom became Bishop of Constantinople in 398, he acted as spiritual guide of Olympias and her companions, and, as many undeserving approached the kind-hearted deaconess for support, he advised her as to the proper manner of utilizing her vast fortune in the service of the poor (Sozomen, “Hist. eccl.”, VIII, ix; P.G., LXVII, 1540). Olympias resigned herself wholly to Chrysostom’s direction, and placed at his disposal ample sums for religious and charitable objects. Even the most distant regions of the empire received her benefactions to churches and the poor.

When Chrysostom was exiled, Olympias supported him in every possible way, and remained a faithful disciple, refusing to enter into communion with his unlawfully appointed successor. Chrysostom encouraged and guided her through his letters, of which seventeen are extant (P.G., LII, 549 sqq.). These are a beautiful memorial of the noble-hearted, spiritual daughter of the great bishop.

Olympias was also exiled, and died a few months after Chrysostom on July 25, 408, probably at Nicomedia. After her death she was venerated as a saint. A biography dating from the second half of the fifth century, which gives particulars concerning her from the “Historia Lausiaca” of Palladius and from the “Dialogus de vita Joh. Chrysostomi”, proves the great veneration she enjoyed. During he riot of Constantinople in 532, the convent of St. Olympias and the adjacent church were destroyed.

Emperor Justinian had it rebuilt, and the prioress, Sergia, transferred there the remains of the foundress from the ruined church of St. Thomas in Brokhthes, where she had been buried. We possess an account of this translation by Sergia herself. The feast of St. Olympias is celebrated in the Greek Church on July 24, and in the Roman Church on December 17.
